A little about the man himself
Rabindranath Tagore was born in a very wealthy Brahman family in Kolkata. His father, Maharishi Debendranath Tagore, was a scholar and religious reformer, himself. His family was the first who tried to combine western ideas with Indian culture. Tagore was the youngest in his family and started to write poems when he was just eight. He was taught by home tutors and then he went to a variety of schools. In 1883, he married Mrinalini Devi Raichaudhuri and the couple had two sons and three daughters. Tagore published his first book, a collection of poems when he was 17. The turning point in his life was ‘Gitanjali’ in which he tried to find his inner calm and talked on topics like human love and divine god. He even wrote short stories and some songs. Some of his poems are considered songs and are inseparable from their music. His song ‘Our Golden Bengal’ became the national anthem of Bangladesh. When he was 70, he took up painting.
